Wrap your flue pipe with a layer of cardboard. This will act as a shim and protect the pipe as you add the next layer of vermiculite insulation. Mix up batches of vermiculite cement and begin packing it over the blanket and chicken wire. It sticks quite well and is very satisfying. I did the whole lot in one thick layer.
